Winter Seclusion Haiku.

Translations: 白狐
1 haiku of Bashô's, 5 haiku of Yosa Buson's
+ 1 extra of Bashô's [MB139]

Matsuo Bashô #473:

Winter seclusion
again I want to lean on
my friend this pillar.

A full haiku !! [5/7/5=17]

[Winter, 1688.]
fuyu-gomori
mata yori-sowa-n
kono hashira.

confined to one's home day after day due to the harsh winter weather //
again -- to lean on someone ("lean-accompany") -- want to //
this -- pillar/post.

Source: "Bashô - The Complete Haiku", translated by Jane Reichhold.
This book includes the kanji/hirágana versions of the haiku !!

Yosa Buson #685:

Dozing off --
I want to hide from myself
winter seclusion.

I don't have the kanji to see whether
it's kakure-n ["hide-want-to"] or
kakuren(-bo) [the game of hide-and-seek: "hiding boys" >
hide from myself and seek for myself.]

Dozing off --
hide and seek with myself
winter seclusion.

ineburite
ware ni kakuren
fuyu-gomori.

Yosa Buson #686:

Winter seclusion
the mountain of my heart
the wall I lean on.

fuyu-gomori
kabe wo kokoro no
yama ni yoru.

"~~ wall (acc.) heart's mountain-like lean-on"

Yosa Buson #687:

Winter seclusion
begins and I begin to write
poetry by lamplight.

fuyu-gomori
touka ni shosu to
kakare-tari.

"~~ (begins) lamplight-by paper-with I-begin - at the same time / as well."

Yosa Buson #688:

katte made / tare ga saishi zo / fuyu-gomori.

kitchen (??) / whose wife-and-children ?!! / winter seclusion.
[made = until; even; . . .]
[?? katte-ma de = kitchen-room at/in]

Yosa Buson #689:

Winter seclusion
estranged from the Buddha
will my heart be ?!

fuyu-gomori
hotoke ni utoki
kokoro ka na.

"~~ Buddha-from far-away/estranged heart I-wonder-?!"

Source: "Collected Haiku of Yosa Buson",
translated by W.S. Merwin & Takako Lento,
but they did a piss-poor job at it and sometimes on purpose:
see e.g. "I wonder what they'll be doing."

Even Jane Reichhold sinned against a translator's duty to honesty
and integrity, due to the religious ethic of being economical with the truth:

[MB139 - Summer, 1681:]
hana mukuge / hadaka warawa no / kazashi ka na.

"flower hibiscus / nudity boy-of / adorns I-wonder-?!"
A hibiscus flower / adorns the boy's nudity /
beautiful, don't you think ?!

> does the flower make the boy beautiful or the boy the flower ?!

Jane: "hibiscus flower / naked I wear one / in my hair."
And in her notes on this haiku mere obfuscating cowshit.

But in all she did a lot better than W.S. Merwin !! And by the way
I seriously doubt, if there ever had been a Takako Lento !!
