Medicinal Eating.
The eating of four-legged animals was (is?) considered unclean,
but in winter so as to keep up one's strength the Middle Way allowed
a Mahayana-Buddhist to eat it in a medicinal way. Chopsticks are
contaminated by the deer meat, so it was thoughtful to bring one's own.
The Buddha Himself was a year-round meat eater and the first food
He ate after He walked away from the Bodhi-Tree was pork !!
Vegetarianism in India came into fashion centuries after His death.
Medicinal Eating At Yosa Buson's Home:
Say it softly:
medicinal eating applies
the Five Virtues !!
Medicinal eating,
the house next door husband
brings his own chopsticks.
Our visiting monk,
he falls asleep like a badger
at our medicinal eating.
My wife and children's
sleeping faces I watch as well
at our medicinal eating.
Medicinal eating,
don't talk to anyone
about Deer Valley !!
