I wonder what they'll be doing.
Novice and priest
the sliding door is closing
softly softly . . .
Translation: 白ç‹
This haiku was purposely mistranslated by Merwin and/or Lento
to hide its homosexual implications !!
They mistranslated it into "are rolled in their quilts" >>
fusuma = a sliding door in traditional houses, a wood frame with paper, so "shshsh . . ." and
korori-korori to = soft (metallic) sound of something light falling or rolling >> softly, effortlessly.
shami = male Buddhist novice,
risshi = Buddhist priest/monk,
ka na = "I wonder what they'll be doing".
[YB730]
shami risshi
korori-korori to
fusuma ka na.
Source: "Collected Haiku of Yosa Buson",
translated by W.S. Merwin & Takako Lento,
. . . but in my opinion it leaves a lot to be desired !!
Japanese only in Romaji, so no kanji to make sure.
And my thank you, http://tangorin.com/ !!!
