Rotsû's old lidded bowl. [MB]
This here, untinged by
the soot of life in this world,
an old lidded bowl.
Deze, onvertint
door het roet van het leven,
kom oud met deksel*.
Short version:
This, untinged
by life's soot, old
lidded bowl.
Translation/Vertaling: 白ç‹
[Matsuo-Bashô-625] [Winter, 1690.]
koré ya yó no / súsu nì somára nù / furú gôshi.
[Rótsû, 1649-1738.] [* of: "..., oude dekselkom."]
"this , of-world // by-soot discolour/tinge not // old lidded-zhî."
åˆ gô, in Chinese: hé = to cover, to shut.
[http://tangorin.com/ >] ã— shi å·µ/å® noun:
zhi (large bowl-shaped ancient Chinese cup with two handles).
Acc. to my dictionary: å® zhî = an ancient wine vessel.
Sabà = roest, smet (rust, tarnish): een haiku-techniek, het geeft
ouderdom aan en verval, aftakeling, aantasting,
treurigheid, verlatenheid, &c.
Het woord "roet" is sabÃ, maar "onvertint door roet" is niet sabÃ;
"oud" is sabÃ. Bashô stelt hier sabà tegenover niet-sabà en omsluit
de niet-sabÃ-bijzin in de sabÃ-hoofdzin ("koré ya . . . furú gôshi"):
"deze, . . . , kom oud met deksel"
<-->
"onvertint door het roet van de wereld"
