Oh Shinto shrine guard, ... [MB195]
Oh Shinto shrine guard,
I've had my name scattered
into* Tree Leaves River !!
Translation: 白ç‹
[* or "by" ??]
[Matsuo-Bashô-195] [Autumn, 1684.]
miyámori yó / wága nà wo chiráse / konohagawa.
宮守 miyámori = 1. Shinto shrine guard; 2. court guard.
waga na = my name (na = namáe).
chirasu = to scatter, to disperse.
chiraseru (causative tense) =
to have something scattered (by someone),
to make someone scatter something,
to let someone scatter something.
ko-no-ha-gawa = tree's - leaf/leaves - river (kawa).
Jane Reichhold translated "miyámori yó" into "life(??) of a priest",
but clearly Bashô was addressing himself to the Shinto shrine guard !!
Compare: "Koïbito yo, aïsh'teru !!
Usually "yo" is left untranslated: "Lover, I love you !!"
