best is yet to come?

everyone always tells me
that the best is yet to come
but what if the best
is already over, already done

my life with the girl of my dreams
was the best time I could think of
but without her on my side
it all has become too tough

I thought I had left my feelings
for her completely behind me
but now I came to the conclusion:
that was the happiest I would ever be

So what is the point of going on
what is the point of living to see
another day, another night
only to see it fill up again with misery?
